BiographyEdward DIXON, born in Nottinghamshire in 1825, arrived in Wellington (with Catherine, his second wife) on the "Royal Albert" in 1853, joining his brother Charles who was farming in Karori. He soon became involved in the manufacture of cordial, at first employed by Peter Laing and then setting up his own business in Cuba Street, and was also later a city councillor. A keen cricketer in his youth, he remained a loyal cricket enthusiast, and in his memory, his family donated the clock at the Basin Reserve. When he eventually retired, his health deteriorated over six or seven years and he died at home on 22 Oct 1890. A member of St Peter's Church, he was survived by his third wife, and 15 children.
