Inscription on TombstoneSacred to the memory of Harriet Strouther, the beloved wife of Geo. Samuel EVANS, of Wellington, died 31 March 1866, in the 77th year of her age. Also of Geo. Samuel EVANS, Esq., LLD, husband of the above, died 23 September 1868, in the 68th year of his life. He was intimately connected with the early foundation of the Colony, arriving with his wife in Wellington in the year 1840. He encountered with her many of those privations to which the early settlers were subject. He devoted himself for sometime to the interests of this Province. Subsequently he went to Melbourne where he held the high position of a Minister of the Crown. He afterwards returned to Wellington to settle where he died highly honoured and deeply lamented.
Description of GraveTwo stones. Upright headstone with incised lettering; decorated with sculpted cross inset into a tilted square frame. The second memorial stone with the summary of George EVANS's career lies flat on the ground.

BiographyGeorge Samuel EVANS, born in Berkshire in 1802, was raised in his father's parish in East London. He arrived in New Zealand on the "Adelaide" in Mar 1840 with his wife Harriet Strouther EVANS. A barrister, editor and politician, he was one of Wellington's founding fathers, named Nui Nui Rangitira by Maori. Evans Bay was named after him, as was George Street in Thorndon. (Harriett Street, Thorndon, was named after his wife.)
