BiographyHenry James FREEMAN was born in Cambridge, England, and left the UK at 18 to join the gold rush in Victoria, Australia, where he soon worked in partnership with Charles Campbell. Ten years later Campbell persuaded him to come to New Zealand, and eventually in 1866 they developed a successful watchmaking and jewellery business - on Lambton Quay at first and then in Manners Street. When Campbell retired and went farming in the Wairarapa in 1878, Henry continued on his own. Committed to freemasonry, he supplied most of the insignia for lodges in the Wellington region, and was one of the oldest members of the Court of Robin Hood of Foresters at the time of his death, aged 78, on 5 Sep 1914. His older son Charles John took over the business at that time. Henry married Hannah (daughter of Eli ALLEN of Tawa Flat) on 20 Jan 1877 and they had at least seven children. Hannah and four children survived him. Hannah FREEMAN died on 6 Sep 1934, aged 84.
