Inscription on TombstoneIn loving memory of William GALWEY, M.Inst.C.E., born in Londonderry, 12 July 1828, died in Wellington, 16 September 1876. "In my father's house are many mansions". Also in loving memory of Eleanor, his wife, born at Anaghbeg, Co. Tipperary, Ireland 3 August 1824, died at Gisborne 15 June 1888. "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes". Also in loving memory of Charles Edmund GALWEY, A.I.A, eldest son of William and Eleanor GALWEY, born in India, 31 October 1856, died at Wellington, 3 May 1930. Also of Nora Frances, their daughter, wife of Henry John WALKER, Gisborne, born at Londonerry 29 January 1859, died at Wellington 12 May 1930. Also of Mary Eleanor SMITH, their daughter, born Gortin Rectory, Co. Tyrone, 7 December 1857, died Wellington 16 November 1945.
Description of GraveThe relocated remains of the original grave are five marble fragments: a cross and four plaques, all laid flat on sloping ground, in varying states of damage; some are broken. Lead lettering.

BiographyHusband of Eleanor, William GALWEY was born in Ireland on 12 Jul 1828. He was a railway engineer who constructed railways in India and Japan. He came to New Zealand for his health, and died in Wellington on 16 Sep 1876. [Newsletter 38, Jun94]
