BiographySamuel ALCORN had a large drapery business on Lambton Quay, which was destroyed by fire on 11 Sep 1877. He and his wife, Jane, escaped with 5 children, but little Winifred (nearly 4) died in the blaze. Both Samuel and Jane were Irish, Sam from Omagh and Jane from Londonderry. (The family photo was published in the Evening Post on the occasion of a family reunion in Dec 1989.) Mary and her sister Margaret started their own very successful 'fancy goods' shop in Wellington, importing from Liberty's of London.
